How to Fix No Sim Card Installed Error

How to Fix No Sim Card Installed Error

Fix the No SIM Card Installed Error on your iPhone

2019 Update
Assuming you pay your monthly bill on time, the “No SIM Card Installed” error is actually an easy fix for your iPhone X and below.

The problem usually has to do with the copper connectors on the sim card getting dirty.  To fix it just follow the steps below or watch the video:

  1. Pop out the sim card by putting a small paperclip or pin into the tiny hole on the side of your iPhone.  Push hard so it pops out.
  2. Take the card out of the little tray.  Remember how it looks when it was in so you can put back correctly.
  3. Put some rubbing alcohol on the end of a Q-Tip.
  4. Rub the copper side of the sim card thoroughly.  Wait a minute to let it dry.
  5. Stick the card back in the slot.
  6. Problem should be solved.

Nail polish remover is a BAD idea. The solvent in nail polish remover is commonly acetone, which will dissolve many plastics. I would stick to rubbing alcohol.

I was sort of nervous when I got it off. HAHAHA.I even thought about buying a new cheaper phone. It was like two months ago when my camera won’t work and I just let it be. I didn’t repair it. Like, I’m gonna stick with my iPhone4 as long as I can call and text. And then. I was really nervous when it says “NO SIM”. THinkin about buying new phone. So yea. I guess I didn’t have to because this taking off and rubbing thing actually worked. By the way, any suggestions on how to fix camera? (front&back camera won’t work. LED won’t work too)

Went to apple for this issue, they had no idea what the problem was. Wanted to clear my entire phone and restore..did not work. They said had to be my hardware which isn’t under warranty. Apple didn’t even look at my sum card.

Googled and found this, which worked great. There was a small piece of dirt on the card, cleaned it and no problems since. Thanks!

I’ve been having “No SIM” message for last 1 month on my iPhone 4 locked to Orange, UK. I’ve tried using an EE SIM. I’ve cleaned the EE SIM and Tray with Alcohol. However, the issue still persists. The SIM works fine when I test it on another unlocked phone. I’ve tried doing a hard reset via iTunes as well. However after selecting the wireless, the phone gives a message “NO SIM INSTALLED”. Took it to Apple, they say the phone looks fine, there is no water damage too. Please Help!!

Although today my phone would go on “No SIM again after a while. I’ve tried this technique but it just keeps going back to No SIM… How do I fix this? Is it the phone or the sim?

Yes. They will replace for free. It’s your carrier not Apple. Go into store and ask for a new one. Did you try alcohol swab first?

    Hi Ethervision,

I bought iPhone 5s from my friend that one is a locked version of ADU Japanese service provider. So I use a R-Sim to bypass the lock phone and works with Airter service provider in India. Now for my official work I moved to UK and here I tried to use with same procedure for Lycamobile (UK service provider) its showing “No Sim” error in the signal point. I’m helpless in this situation, it will be very greatful if you provide any solution to use my mobile successfully. Hope you will help me as you did for many.

    many many Thanks – Arun

    • Ethervision March 16, 2015 at 3:18 pm - Reply

Yikes. That’s a tough one to solve as you’ve crossed so many countries. I’d start by looking specifically at which Apple device you have. I know in the US, the ATT phone is different than the Sprint/Verizon phone. Then you can see what’s compatible with what.

  129. Kentucky Packrat March 17, 2015 at 3:39 pm - Reply

An old “tip” from the days of cleaning memory SIMM and DIMM contacts: use a fresh, clean, soft pencil eraser if you don’t have good, pure alcohol. Gently erase the metal surface of the SIM card (don’t press down, don’t scratch), and blow the eraser dust off the SIM before it goes back into the phone.

My iPhone 5 just started the NO SIM messages, and I’m hoping that this has cleared the dirt off the SIM.

If cleaning or erasing the SIM card doesn’t work, you’ve either got a bad SIM card or a bad SIM reader in the phone. SIM cards can fail, so go to your carrier for a SIM change first.

  130. Arun March 18, 2015 at 8:07 am - Reply

Thanks for your reply, The device where I’m using is iphone 5s and it is locked by “AU” operator(Japanese carrier). Can you please adivse for this. And also I want to highlight that for couple of times i received signal from “Lycamobile”(UK carrier) by using the r-sim. Then later point it failed. kindly trouble shoot this.

I tried twice already but it still didnt work. I’ve had the same problem several times before but i didnt even use the alcohol, it works. But this time it wont work even with the alcohol. and i read all the comments above and youre like go to your carrier and stuff, but if im about to just try another sim card and it wont work, then does it means the problem is on the r-sim? is it possible? and i rubbed some alcohol on the r-sim too and it get wet, but this doesnt cause any damage to the rsim right?

Just don’t have the alcohol dripping off Q-tip and you should be fine. May be a bad connector on your device itself.

I have the latest iPhone SE and it fell into the toilet and sat in there for about 3-5 seconds before I noticed it was in there along with my other purse contents. I did not turn the phone off immediately, in fact, I dialed out to a couple of family members to test it out. After researching, I attempted the bag of rice tip. I turned my phone off and put it into a bag of rice. After a couple of hours of panic, I decided perhaps it’ll dry better if I removed the SIM card tray. Pure genius (not really) Needless to say, rice got inside the phone via SIM card tray and I only knew this because the tray resisted sliding in. So, the genius in me grabbed a flashlight and a paper clip and as carefully as possible, removed the 2 grains of rice. Now it is not reading the SIM card and I will never know whether it is because of water or paper clip because I never turned my phone back on before removing the SIM card. The representative at my carriers store placed her bets on water damage but I’m placing mine on paper clip because the LCI is still as white as snow. I am conflicted and need help. My phone is insured and I am an honest woman and really pride myself on doing so but I am also aware that it is possible that it may not be covered because of both reasons.

It will say “searching….” where it should say the service. Straight talk told us to take th sim out and put it back in. We did that and it worked for a few hours but went back to the searching concept. We continue to repeat this process and most of the time it doesn’t work. Some times it does work but only for a short time during the day. We have factory reset the phone, rebooted it, cleared all data, and so on and nothing seems to be working. Any thought?
