Skateropolis Gets Strong Review from AppCraver

Appcraver, a top iPhone application review site, gave Skateropolis a strong 8 out of 10 rating in a recent review.

Full Review Here.

Skateropolis is a U.S. web and iPhone based skatepark finder with a social twist.  Skateboarders can search for skateparks on the web and with the iPhone & iPod touch application.  Skaters can post videos and photos to their local skateparks and self created groups.  The top contributor for each skatepark has his/her avatar featured on the info tab of each skatepark.  Skaters can also follow each other which is called “skitching”.  It’s like following someone on Twitter.  This makes it much easier to plan that next skate sesh.

Apple chooses Baby Sign ASL iPhone Application as Staff Favorite

Ethervision and iDev2 are pleased to announce that Baby Sign ASL has been chosen by Apple as a “Staff Favorite” and is being featured on the front page of the iTunes Store!

Baby Sign ASL is a video phrase book of over 200 American Sign Language (ASL) gestures.  Your child can communicate with her hands well before she can communicate verbally.  By teaching them rudimentary sign language, you empower them to communicate their wants, needs and feelings.

BENEFITS TO YOUR BABY

  • Signing enhances language skills:  On average babies who learned to sign know 50 more words by the age of two than babies who never learned sign.
  • Signing gives a window into your child’s mind and personality.  Slow down and see how he interprets the world well before he can speak.
  • Signing increases your baby’s IQ by an average of 12 points. (Source: Acredolo & Goodwyn)
  • Signing increases your baby’s self-esteem by letting her communicate her needs in ways other than crying.
  • Signing with your child builds mutual trust and enhances the bond between you.

With over 200 words, BabySign includes everything a baby is likely to see, experience and feel. Categories include feelings, people, bedtime-dressing and food-kitchen among many others.

Signs can be sorted alphabetically or by category.  You can choose favorites, search for signs and test your knowledge in quiz mode.

We are very excited that Baby Sign ASL is getting great reviews and praise from mothers and the signing community.

Skateropolis artwork by Jay Ryan

The Skateropolis project for the skateboard community is coming along quite nicely.

I am pleased as punch that Jay Ryan, owner of The Bird Machine, is the artist behind the Skateropolis web site banner and iPhone application.  Jay’s artwork is a perfect representation of what we were going for when we set out to create the ultimate skating resource.

Check out this short video about Jay and The Bird Machine:

The Skateropolis Web site will be going live in just a week or two. We hope to see you there.

Skateropolis: A creative outlet for the Skate Culture

Skating just got a whole lot easier.  We are stoked to announce Skateropolis.com: A creative outlet for skaters and the entire skateboard industry.  We have tirelessly mapped out every skatepark in the U.S. (and soon the world) including very specific details about all the skateparks from terrain to designer.  The web site was built entirely open source so everyone in the skateboarding culture can link his favorite photos and videos from all the major sites including youtube, flickr, picassa, vimeo and many others.

All public skate photos and videos can be cross-referenced with user groups and skateparks so that we house the most comprehensive skateboard database in the world.  Site users will always have the ability to edit and rate any information on any park and they can add a new skatepark with the click of a button.

Our goal is to connect the greater skateboarding community as a whole but also to keep the local skating scenes connected.  We are going to do this by offering only sponsorships only to companies that benefit the skatebaording community.  A banner on each skatepark is reserved for each local skateshop (first come first served) so each can connect with the skaters in the area for upcoming events and for the sales of shoes, decks, trucks, wheels, etc.

Skateropolis is launching very soon.  Stop on by when you get a chance.

MooTools 1.2 javascript library fresh out of the box

Although the demos are not yet in working order, the new MooTools 1.2 version is out! We are eagerly awaiting the sleek new demos which will hopefully arive soon.

After months of messing around with javascript libraries, I believe we finally came up with a winner—MooTools (at least for now).  The library is extremely well documented, and very customizable. The classes are generally kept small with many small methods. The framework was written modularly — so the framework is split into a numerous files of functionality with a clean dependency map. Although jquery and scriptaculous are extremely functional and free javascript libraries, we coin MooTools as king.

In one of our most recent projects we used customized versions of JonDesign, SmoothBox—along with the phatfusion, multibox to produce a new front door into www.cinn.org.

Page Rank and Link Farms

Conclusion: Never ever link to a site you know nothing about. I have been doing a lot of homework on how to best take advantage of one-way links and reciprocal links to best optimize your web site. In plain English, there are two very important take-aways:1. Never link to a site unless you have done your homework on it. The best tool to know whether or not you are linking to a link farm is to use the Google Toolbar. You can download it here…   Google ToolbarThe Google Toolbar will tell you how a page ranks.  If the page does not rank then you know Google has it on the banned list.  Don’t worry if one of these sites links to you.  Google knows that you can not control what a link farm does.  But, if you link to the link-farm, you will go down in ranking and you could even possibly be banned.2. Never pay for links.  Google has become savvy to this practice and they have penalized many big companies for doing so.  The SearchEngineJournal has a great ongoing discussion about this and page ranking in general. The best advice for building your web site and blog is to provide great content so that people search you out and link to you.  Definitely be savvy and on the lookout for good link-back partnerships but be smart about it.
